Sanitary Sewer Backups

Who to Call

Normal Hours

For all sewer blockages please call the Township Building at 610-356-4040 at ext. 500 during normal working hours (Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm).

Emergencies

If your problem occurs after working hours or on the weekend please call 911. Homeowners with public sewers should review their homeowner’s insurance policies regarding sewer back-up claims. The rules of law under Pennsylvania Political Subdivision Tort Claim Act make it difficult for the Township/Sewer Authority to be held liable for sewer back-ups.

Sewer Blockages

Although the Township Sewer Department will respond to any sewer emergency we recommend that you try to determine where the blockage is. This will enable you to get the blockage removed as soon as possible. The Township does not have the equipment to clean the 4 inch lateral pipes. If the back-up is in your sewer lateral contact a sewer cleaning service.

In most cases, when raw sewage is entering your house but you are not using your facilities the cause could be in the Township main sewer. If the sewage backs up only when you use your water then it’s more likely the blockage is in your pipes. If you are in doubt please call the Township or 911 to report the blockage.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING SEWER BACKUPS

Sewer backups and flooding can cause devastating property damage and are not covered by standard homeowners insurance policies.  The majority of these claims are the responsibility of the property owner.  Sewage from sanitary sewer lines occasionally back up into houses through drain pipes.  These backups not only cause extensive water damage that is difficult and expensive to repair, but also create health hazards.

MARPLE TOWNSHIP is not responsible for damages cause by sewers, drains and sump pumps except under limited/special circumstances provided by the Pennsylvania Political Subdivision Tort Claim Act.

Property owners must be aware that they are responsible for the maintenance and repair of their private sewer lateral from their dwelling to and including its connection to the Township sewer main.  Owners should also review their Flood and Sewer Backup insurance coverage with their agent/insurance companies in order to properly protect their personal property.

Please pay particular attention to the following coverages:
